Durable and Reliable: Asphalt Roofing
When getting ready to embark on a roof replacement project you want to invest in a roofing material that is going to look great while providing reliable protection from the rapidly changing weather patterns here in the Northwest. An asphalt roof is one of the most widly known and established types of roofing on the market—having been used on millions of homes. The affordability of asphalt shingles and the wide variety of shingle styles to choose from mean that you can get a beautiful roofing solution for much less than other roofing types.
Life Expectancy of Asphalt Roofs
The lower cost of asphalt shingles make this roofing type a great, affordable option, but the lower price generally means these roofs will not last as long as some other more expensive roofing types, such as metal. The average asphalt roof, however, should last 15 to 20 years with a proper roof maintenance schedule. With that said, one of the big benefits of an asphalt roof is their low maintenance overall.
The Asphalt Roofing Process
The roofing process when using asphalt shingles is fairly straight forward. The old roofing has to first be pulled off before being replaced with the new roofing materials. Once the new roof is removed damage to the underlying sheeting needs to be inspected, and if needed, repaired. Once done, the roof edge is covered in a self-stick underlayment to hold out the weather, followed by the roof being covered with a felt paper (also called tar paper) designed to hold out moisture. The final step is to setup your starter shingles and then lay them down in rows, securing them as you go.
