Types of Roofing

There several different materials you can choose when it comes to installing your new roof. From cedar shake to metal roofing, all of these materials have different looks, prices, and require different maintenance routines.

Asphalt Roofing

Asphalt shingles have been used since 1901 and to this day they are one of the most popular types of roofing material. In fact, 4 out of 5 homes have asphalt roofs. One of the main reasons why asphalt shingles are a top choice are because they are highly affordable and require little maintenance.

Another reason why people love asphalt roofs is that they come in a variety of shapes, colors, and textures. There are two main types of asphalt roofing: architectural and 3-tab shingles. Architectural shingles vary in size, shape, and color, thus add extra visual interest to your home. 3-tab shingles are thinner than architectural shingles. They will give your roof a flatter, more uniform look. The average asphalt roof lasts anywhere between 15 to 30 years with regular maintenance.

Cedar Shake Roofing

Cedar shake roofing may cost about three times more than standard asphalt roofing, but it truly provides a unique look. Cedar shakes give homes a beautiful, natural look, and distinct style. They’re popular on historical homes and other traditional-style homes. Cedar shakes are an environmentally-friendly and natural insulator for homes. They don’t absorb UV like asphalt shingles or metal roofs and stand up very well.

Cedar shake roofs require slightly more maintenance than asphalt roofs, so we recommend having your cedar shake roof occasionally inspected and cleaned. And because cedar shakes are made of wood, they need to be treated with sealer and fire retardant every 5 to 10 years. You can also have it restained if its color begins to fade or if you’d like to update the color. Cedar shake roofs typically last over 30 years with proper maintenance and care.

Metal Roofing

Metal roofing is quickly starting to become just as popular as asphalt roofing. While it may cost at least twice the amount as an asphalt roof, metal roofing can also last twice as long with proper maintenance — which is over 50 years. Today, steel is the most common material used for metal roofs. However, you can find metal roofs made of copper and aluminum. Metal roofs are unique in that they can be designed and stamped to mimic other roofs like cedar shakes or asphalt shingles.

Metal roofs come with a few advantages too. Metal roofs not only have a longer lifespan than asphalt shingles, but they’re also resistant to mildew, rain, fire, and wind. They’re also low-maintenance and sustainable — they can be recycled at the end of their service life.

Tile Roofing

Tile is considered one of the most durable materials to use as roofing. With proper maintenance, your tile roof could last you anywhere between 50 and 100 years. However, tile roofs are also more expensive and require more care.

Today, you can find tile roofs made out of slate, clay, terra cotta, and concrete. They also come in a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes. Tile roofs are resistant to rain, wind, and fire. They also don’t rot like wood or rust like metal. Because tile roofs are heavier than other roofing materials, they may not be the right choice for every home.
