Architectural Shingles vs Asphalt Shingles: Which Is Right for You?
March 8, 2024
When it comes to choosing the right roofing material for your home, shingles are a popular option known for their durability and versatility. However, homeowners often find themselves torn between two common types of shingles: architectural shingles and asphalt shingles. In this blog post, we will delve into the key differences between these two shingle types to help you make an informed decision for your roofing project.
What are Architectural Shingles?
Architectural shingles, also known as dimensional or laminate shingles, are a type of roofing material designed to give your roof a more textured and layered appearance. These shingles are thicker and heavier than traditional asphalt shingles, providing added durability and aesthetic appeal. Architectural shingles are available in a wide range of styles, colors, and designs, making them a popular choice for homeowners looking to enhance the visual appeal of their homes.
Features of Architectural Shingles:
Thickness: Architectural shingles are thicker than traditional asphalt shingles, typically ranging from 30 to 50-year lifespan.
Design Options: These shingles come in various styles, including slate, wood, and tile mimics, giving homeowners the flexibility to choose a look that complements their home.
Durability: With a longer lifespan and enhanced wind resistance, architectural shingles can withstand harsh weather conditions better than asphalt shingles.
What are Asphalt Shingles?
Asphalt shingles are the most common type of roofing material used in residential properties. These shingles are made of a fiberglass mat coated with a layer of asphalt and ceramic granules. Asphalt shingles come in two primary types: traditional 3-tab shingles and architectural shingles. While they may not offer as much visual depth as architectural shingles, asphalt shingles are known for their affordability and ease of installation.
Features of Asphalt Shingles:
Affordability: Asphalt shingles are more cost-effective than architectural shingles, making them a popular choice for budget-conscious homeowners.
Easy Installation: Asphalt shingles are easier to install than architectural shingles, making them a preferred option for DIY enthusiasts.
Variety: These shingles come in a variety of colors and styles, allowing homeowners to find a look that suits their preferences.
Key Differences Between Architectural and Asphalt Shingles
When comparing architectural shingles and asphalt shingles, several key differences set them apart. From material composition to lifespan and visual appeal, each type of shingle offers unique benefits and drawbacks that homeowners should consider before making a decision.

Installation Process
Architectural Shingles:
Professional Installation: Due to their heavier weight and layered design, architectural shingles require professional installation by a roofing contractor.
Complexity: The installation process involves laying the shingles in a staggered pattern to create a textured appearance.
Asphalt Shingles:
DIY-Friendly: Asphalt shingles are easier to install, making them a suitable option for homeowners looking to tackle their roofing project themselves.
Standard Installation: The process involves overlapping the shingles in a simple 3-tab pattern for a traditional look.
Cost Comparison
Initial Cost:
Architectural Shingles: While architectural shingles are more expensive upfront, their durability and longevity can result in cost savings over time.
Asphalt Shingles: Asphalt shingles are a more budget-friendly option initially but may require more frequent replacement.
Long-Term Costs:
Maintenance: Architectural shingles typically require less maintenance and repair over their lifespan compared to asphalt shingles.
Maintenance and Care
Architectural Shingles:
Regular Inspections: Periodic inspections can help identify and address any issues with your architectural shingles before they escalate.
Cleaning: Gentle cleaning with a mild detergent can help keep your shingles looking their best.
Asphalt Shingles:
Maintenance Tips: Regularly clean debris and inspect for damage to ensure the longevity of your asphalt shingles.
Repairs: Promptly address any missing or damaged shingles to prevent water leaks and roof damage.
Choosing the Right Shingles for Your Roof
Considerations:
Budget: Evaluate your budget constraints and long-term financial goals when deciding between architectural and asphalt shingles.
Climate: Consider your local weather conditions and the impact they may have on your choice of roofing materials.
Consultation: Seek guidance from a reputable roofing contractor to get professional advice tailored to your specific roofing needs.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the choice between architectural shingles and asphalt shingles ultimately depends on your priorities and preferences. While architectural shingles offer a more luxurious appearance and longer lifespan, asphalt shingles provide a cost-effective and easy-to-install option for homeowners on a budget. By weighing the benefits and drawbacks of each shingle type and considering factors such as climate, budget, and maintenance requirements, you can make an informed decision when it comes time to replace your roof.
Whether you opt for the dimensional elegance of architectural shingles or the practicality of asphalt shingles, investing in a high-quality roof is essential for protecting your home's structural integrity and enhancing its curb appeal. Whichever shingle type you choose, ensuring proper installation and regular maintenance will help prolong the lifespan of your roof and provide lasting protection for years to come.

Nick and Jeff E. were great. They both took the time to make sure we understood our options, answered our questions and we were able to make the best choice... read more of roof without pressure. We loved the Malarkey shingles they use and the 20 year included warranty. The price was comparable to other roofers we had gotten estimates from but we felt they had a better product, and a better warranty. They were well-organized and handled all permits needed as well as having a wide range of financing options. They gave us a day and time for job start and were on time, and were finished within the time range Jeff E said. They did an amazing job cleaning up nails and debris, and every member of the crew walked the whole yard with the magnet to make sure they got all the nails and screws. When we had additional questions both Nick and Jeff E. got back to us quickly. We are really happy with the whole experience and would recommend Ibex to anyone.
